AssetTiger has no permanent free plan. Its entry tier is a thirty-day trial, and when it ends the account drops to view-only unless you upgrade. A lot of comparisons start there, because the decision is no longer free against paid but which paid tool.
The paid tiers are banded by asset count, with users, sites and locations unlimited. That is a fair model. The question is simply what you get for it.
A name in a field did not settle a dispute
AssetTiger records a basic assignment. It does not capture a signature at handover or a condition note at return, so when a laptop comes back cracked — or does not come back — the record shows who it was assigned to and nothing about what they accepted.
Leavers took things with them
When someone leaves, the only question that matters is what they hold. An assignment list can answer it if somebody thinks to run it the week before. It does not turn that list into a recovery checklist, or into a certificate saying the person is clear.
Servicing needed more than a warranty date
AssetTiger tracks warranty dates and light maintenance. Once equipment is expensive enough to service rather than replace, AMC contracts, claim contacts, repair costs and repeat faults need somewhere to live, and a date field is not it.
When staying on AssetTiger is the right call
- A list of what you own, where it is and what it cost is genuinely the whole requirement, and nobody borrows anything.
- You rely on AssetTiger's depreciation, and asset-band pricing suits a register that is not growing quickly.
- Nobody has asked you for a signed-off count, and no other system needs your asset data.
- Your team is content with it and nothing has gone wrong that a better tool would have prevented. Moving costs time; do it for a reason.

- It is IT-oriented, so tools, instruments and AV kit sit awkwardly. Depreciation is limited — check it carefully if AssetTiger's book values were a reason you used it.

- Self-hosting means no automatic backups and community-only support. There are no bookings and no AMC contracts, and its audit is basic.

- Price follows the item count you set on a slider, so AssetTiger's asset meter comes with you. Custom fields, audits and purchase orders are second tier and above; offline mode is Enterprise only.

- Pricing is quote-only after a sales call, a sharp change from AssetTiger's published bands, and first real use comes after a configuration project.
How to choose
Three questions that separate this shortlist
Is the register IT hardware and nothing else?
If so, Reftab and Snipe-IT are both built for it and both are inexpensive routes. If the register includes tools, instruments, furniture or field kit, both will feel IT-shaped, and Stackroom, EZOfficeInventory or Asset Panda fit better.
Do you have a server and someone to look after it?
Snipe-IT's free price depends entirely on that answer. Without one, you are comparing managed products, and the useful question becomes which pricing model — asset bands, an item slider, a flat fee, team-based or a quote — suits the way your register grows.
What went wrong that the register did not prevent?
Lost or disputed equipment needs signatures and custody history: Stackroom, or Reftab's loan agreements if it is only IT. Missed servicing or unclaimed cover needs contracts and maintenance records: Stackroom, EZOfficeInventory or Asset Panda. If nothing went wrong, reread the reasons to stay.
Migration
Moving your data out of AssetTiger
AssetTiger's data model is close to Stackroom's in the parts that matter for a move: an asset list with categories, sites and locations, purchase details and depreciation. That makes it one of the easier migrations, because you are adding workflow around the same records rather than reshaping them.
Export your assets to a spreadsheet with serial numbers, purchase price and date, category and location. Build your site-and-location structure as Stackroom's hierarchy (site, building, room) before importing, then load people and assets through the CSV import. Stackroom holds a depreciation method (SLM or WDV), useful life and salvage value per asset, so map those deliberately rather than assuming book values will match to the penny.
What AssetTiger never held cannot come across: signatures, return condition and service contracts. Warranty dates can be re-entered as cover records, and that is the moment to add the policy number and claim contact AssetTiger had nowhere to put. If the trial is what ended, take your export before the account goes view-only, or confirm with AssetTiger that view-only still allows one.

Does AssetTiger capture signatures at handover?
No. It records a basic assignment, which tells you who an asset was given to but not that they accepted it or in what condition. Stackroom captures a signature at handover and again at return, records condition on the way back, and keeps the full custody history per asset and per person.
We rely on AssetTiger for depreciation. Will we lose that?
Not with Stackroom, EZOfficeInventory, Asset Panda or Snipe-IT, which all record depreciation. Stackroom supports straight-line and written-down-value methods with useful life and salvage value, shows current book value and has a depreciation schedule report. Reftab's depreciation is limited, so test it against your needs first.
How much of our AssetTiger setup carries across to Stackroom?
Most of the register does: tags, serial numbers, categories, locations, purchase details and people all come in through CSV import. What you gain is the layer AssetTiger does not have — custody signatures, bookings, service contracts and audits — and that part starts empty on day one.
Our AssetTiger trial has ended. Can we still get our data out?
Check before relying on it. AssetTiger's trial drops to view-only unless you upgrade, and whether view-only permits a full export is worth confirming with AssetTiger directly. If it does not, one month on the smallest paid band may be the cheapest way to take a clean export.
