What is the best alternative to Snipe-IT?

The upgrade you keep postponing
Self-hosted Snipe-IT costs nothing to license and something every month to run: a server, backups, a TLS certificate, upgrades and community-only support. None of it is difficult. All of it lands on one technical person who already has a day job.
The usual symptom is an instance a few versions behind and a restore nobody has tested. At that point the argument is not about features. It is about who owns the box.
The work happens away from a desk
Snipe-IT is a web application first. That suits laptops issued at onboarding and collected at offboarding, both of which happen within reach of a keyboard.
It suits a stores counter, a site walk or a count in a basement with no signal rather less. Teams in that position want a native app that queues scans offline, and that is usually what sends them looking.
Another department asked to join
Snipe-IT's model — assets, licences, accessories and consumables, assigned to users — is shaped around IT. When facilities, a lab or the AV store want to share the register, they bring reservations, condition on return and servicing schedules with them, and the model starts to strain.
Audits and cover outgrew a date field
Snipe-IT's audit is basic, and it has no home for annual or comprehensive maintenance contracts. Teams that owe finance a scoped physical count, or pay for AMC cover on equipment, end up keeping those records in a spreadsheet beside it.
When staying on Snipe-IT is the right call
- Your data has to sit on infrastructure you control because a regulator, a security policy or an air gap says so. No managed service fixes that, ours included.
- The server genuinely is not a burden — you have infrastructure staff for whom one more PHP application is a rounding error.
- Hosting is the only complaint. Snipe-IT's own hosted plans keep unlimited assets and users and take the server off your hands, which is a much smaller move than a migration.
- You modify the code, or intend to. Open source is the point, and nothing managed on this list can offer it.

Alternatives to Snipe-IT worth evaluating
Ordered by how well each fits someone leaving Snipe-IT. Not all of these are us, and the one that is is labelled.

- Your Snipe-IT is mostly laptops, monitors and phones issued to staff, and you mainly want someone else to run it.
- Watch out for
- Software licence tracking, which Snipe-IT includes, is a separate per-software-user charge. Maintenance, cycle-count audits and any kind of location trail are thin, so if those were your reasons for leaving, this does not fix them.

That is usStackroom answers the other set of complaints — about how Snipe-IT fits the work, not where it runs. The mobile app is offline-first with a local queue, handovers and returns are signed on the device with condition recorded at return, shared items can be booked with overlap checks, and a laptop, a torque wrench and a projector sit in one register.

- Equipment changes hands on foot, departments beyond IT want in, or you owe someone a physical count and a record of service contracts.
- Watch out for
- It is managed-only and not open source, so data residency ends the conversation. There is no software licence tracking, and Snipe-IT's accessories and consumables have no natural home — Stackroom tracks individually identified items, not quantities.

- Your estate is IT, it is managed through MDM, and you want device data to arrive without anyone typing it.
- Watch out for
- The meter changes completely. Snipe-IT never charged by asset; AssetSonar charges per asset per month, so every monitor and dock you register adds to the bill.

Equipment tracking & checkoutIf you left Snipe-IT because it would not bend to your process, EZOfficeInventory goes the other way: a broad platform with deep configuration, purchase orders and a large report set, with unlimited users and locations.

- You have a named system owner with time to configure it, and procurement belongs in the same system as the register.
- Watch out for
- Pricing follows an item-count slider, a new pressure after Snipe-IT's unlimited assets. Custom fields and audits start at the second tier, and offline mode is Enterprise-only.
How to choose
Three questions that separate this shortlist
Are you leaving the server, or the software?
If Snipe-IT does what you need and the only problem is running it, price Snipe-IT's hosted plans and Reftab before anything else — both keep the shape you know. If the complaints are about mobile, bookings or non-IT equipment, hosting is secondary, and Stackroom or EZOfficeInventory are the ones to put through a real trial.
Do you still need software licences tracked?
Snipe-IT tracks licence seats. Stackroom does not track software at all. AssetSonar covers it, and Reftab covers it as a separate per-software-user charge. If licences are central to how you use Snipe-IT today, that narrows the list before anything else does.
How will a per-item meter change behaviour?
Snipe-IT never priced on asset count, so nobody ever hesitated to register a cable tester. AssetSonar charges per asset and EZOfficeInventory by item count, and both tend to make teams leave cheap, numerous things off the books. Check every pricing page, ours included, against your real asset count before you decide.
Migration
Moving your data out of Snipe-IT
Snipe-IT gives you an unusually good starting position if you self-host, because you hold the database itself. Take a full backup before anything else, then export the asset list with asset tags, serials, models, categories, locations, status, purchase data and custom fields, plus the users list and, if your export offers it, checkout history. On a hosted plan, check with Snipe-IT what export you are entitled to before you give notice.
In Stackroom, those columns land in categories, hierarchical locations, departments and custom fields you define before importing. People and assets both come in by CSV — people first, so each current holder resolves to a named person. Snipe-IT's asset tag maps to Stackroom's per-unit asset tag, and if your existing labels carry that code as a barcode or QR code, import it and test a handful with a phone before printing anything new. Relabelling can then happen as old labels wear out.
Three things stay behind. Licences, because Stackroom has no software tracking. Accessories and consumables, because Stackroom is not built for quantities — decide which accessories deserve their own record (a dock, a headset) and leave the rest. And checkout history, which is better kept as an archived export or an attachment than replayed as fake assignments. Depreciation is worth re-entering deliberately, choosing SLM or WDV with useful life and salvage value per asset.
Keep the Snipe-IT instance running read-only for a month rather than switching it off. It costs nothing beyond the server you were already paying for, and it answers the inevitable question about who had something in March until Stackroom has history of its own.

Snipe-IT alternatives — common questions
Is there a free Snipe-IT alternative we do not have to host?
Reftab has a free-forever plan capped at 50 assets, and Stackroom has a free plan with unlimited users. Neither is as uncapped as self-hosted Snipe-IT, which is free with unlimited assets and users provided you run the server. Free and managed always carries a limit somewhere; check where it falls against your own asset count.
Should we just move to Snipe-IT's hosted version?
If hosting is your only complaint, yes — it is the smallest change available. Hosted plans keep unlimited assets and users and are priced by hosting tier, so you pay for the server and support rather than usage. It does not change the product, so if you wanted offline mobile scanning or bookings you will still be without them.
Does Stackroom have an equivalent of Snipe-IT's acceptance flow?
It goes further along the same line. The holder signs on the device at handover and again at return, with condition recorded at return, and can acknowledge receipt separately. Every previous holder stays on the asset's history, and a departing employee can be sent an asset clearance certificate once everything is back.
What happens to our Snipe-IT licences and consumables?
They stay behind. Stackroom has no software licence tracking and is not built for quantities of consumables. Keep licences in Snipe-IT or a dedicated tool, and put consumables in stock software if they need managing at all. Accessories that are individually valuable, such as docking stations, can become assets in their own right.
Will our Snipe-IT API scripts carry over?
Not as written. Stackroom has its own REST API and 41 webhook events, so anything scripted against Snipe-IT needs rewriting against it. The webhooks are the part worth planning around: a checkout, return or status change can notify another system as it happens.
