Agent-based discovery means endpoints to reach, policies to agree and exclusions to manage. For an estate that needs that visibility, it earns its keep.

For a team that wanted to know who borrowed the projector, it is months of work before the first useful answer, and the answer is about software.

Operations wanted it; IT owned it

When the pressure comes from facilities, a lab or a field team, an IT platform tends to stay IT's. The people who issue and receive equipment do not live in it, so they do not update it, and the register ends up describing the networked estate well and everything else barely.

The licence shape suits a year, not a pilot

InvGate counts agents, with a fixed-price entry tier, per-agent pricing above it, and the workflow builder, AI service agent and on-premise hosting held for higher tiers. That is a sensible shape for an IT department budgeting a year ahead.

Monitors, docks, radios, instruments and tools have no agent to report them. Whatever InvGate can store about them, none of the discovery that justified it reaches them — and they are where equipment actually goes missing.

Pick it if
IT is keeping a service desk, and the reason to leave InvGate is the vendor or the platform rather than the category.
Watch out for
It is agent-priced too, and adds a second meter in asset units — each plan bundles 100 asset units and more are bought on top. If cost pushed you out of InvGate, model this one carefully before assuming it is cheaper.

Pick it if
Operations, facilities, a lab or a field team owns the problem, and much of the equipment never touches a network.
Watch out for
No discovery, no software inventory, no licence reconciliation, no service desk. If IT still needs those, keep InvGate for IT and use Stackroom for the physical side — or choose an IT platform instead of us.

If discovery was the part of InvGate you valued and the service desk was not, Lansweeper is a dedicated discovery and IT inventory platform: what is on the network, what is installed on it, and where patch and vulnerability exposure sits.
Pick it if
Tickets live somewhere else, or nowhere, and you want scanning without an ITSM platform attached to it.
Watch out for
It is discovery, not ITSM, and custody is basic assignment. Licensing is by asset count in bands, so the bill now grows with the estate rather than with the IT team.

Watch out for

How to choose

Three questions that separate this shortlist

Who is actually pushing for the change?

If it is IT, stay in the ITSM and ITAM world: Freshservice, AssetSonar, or a discovery tool such as Lansweeper. If it is operations, facilities or a lab, the requirement is custody and bookings rather than discovery, and Stackroom is the closer fit — however capable the IT platforms are.

Do you still need to see installed software?

InvGate normalises installed software and reconciles licences. Lansweeper inventories installed software; AssetSonar and Setyl track software and licences. Stackroom does none of it. If software visibility is a hard requirement, that removes one option at once and tells you Stackroom could only ever be a companion.

One vendor, or two joined up?

InvGate's appeal was one data set for assets and tickets. Freshservice and AssetSonar keep that. Lansweeper, Setyl and Stackroom each do one part well and expect you to connect them to something else — by export, integration or, in Stackroom's case, its REST API and webhooks.

Migration

Moving your data out of InvGate

Start by separating what InvGate discovered from what somebody typed in. Agent-reported hardware and software data belongs with whichever IT tool replaces InvGate, if any. The records people created by hand — equipment no agent ever reported — are the ones that move to Stackroom, and they are usually the ones most in need of a tidy-up first.

Export the asset list with tags, serials, models, types, locations, assigned users and custom fields; confirm your export actually includes assignments and custom fields before you plan around them. People and assets import into Stackroom by CSV, people first, with types mapped to categories, sites and rooms to hierarchical locations, and custom fields to fields you create in Stackroom beforehand.

Contracts and warranties are re-created as Stackroom cover records, which is a chance to record what may not have been held properly before: AMC and CMC contracts, policy numbers, claim contacts and renewal chains. Software inventory, licence data and ticket history do not come across; keep them with the IT tool or as an archived export.

If IT is keeping InvGate, the realistic end state is both: InvGate for the discovered estate and the desk, Stackroom for custody and the physical tail. Decide before go-live which system owns a laptop's current holder, or you will have two answers to the same question within a month.
